Covid-19 is hard on everyone.
Especially disadvantaged children.
When Covid struck London, some wards were hit harder than others.
Hackney was one of them.
At Highlights, we had to respond fast. Initially we closed down our face-to-face groups and activities, but we knew we had a vital role to play in the lives of children and young people who found themselves abruptly shut out of school. They were scared and anxious, parents were stressed, and finances were squeezed tighter than ever.
They had little to do; no games, books, toys or sport equipment, no structure, and no end in sight. Until we stepped in to support them, as always.
“I felt so alone and afraid and nervous of what would happen. I got a call from my leader and I felt like someone still cared, like the world hadn’t gone mad…”
Esther, age 12
“I was so bored (during lockdown) and then I got an arts and crafts kit from Highlights. It kept me busy for ages.”
Ella, age 11
“Everyone was ill and a neighbour of ours passed away. I wasn’t feeling good either, I couldn’t leave the house. Talking to leaders and peers on our weekly telephone conference, trying to make sense of what was happening together, it felt better.”
Laura, age 14
Since the start of Covid, Highlights has provided:
Small summer residential
Covid-friendly programs
Holiday activity days
Scooters (among other exercise equipment) sent to homes
Arts and craft kits, delivered to children’s homes
Holiday programme
Our usual trip in the winter holidays was impossible. We compensated by hiring the Banana Bus for younger children, allowing them to enjoy the experience in small, Covid-safe groups. They also enjoyed entertainment and refreshments in a large indoor setting.
We showed an educational and entertaining film for older users one evening. Users were delighted to get together in a safe way, and enjoyed the refreshments, socialising and support.
Talent Programme
We taught our children new songs and dance steps virtually, so they could practice them at home and feel like they were performing. We also supplied them with music and earphones.
Youth club
Youth clubs continued virtually during lockdown, with children talking to their leaders and friends on the phone, playing games, and getting the support they needed. We also delivered exercise equipment and games to users at home, so they could be entertained there.
Once it was safe, we held small, in-person groups. This was so important for these struggling children, who had not seen their friends and leaders in months.
Leaders programme
We held a small day retreat for our leaders in the summer. Our regular retreat includes sleeping over — our hard-working leaders deserve it — but this was not viable. However, we still managed to provide them with educational, skills-based workshops, great refreshments, and a fun time that is fondly remembered by all.
Summer sleepaway camp
We held a small camp in accordance with government guidelines, for 50 of our most vulnerable members. They had struggled all through the strict lockdowns, and we were delighted to be able to provide them with a memorable week away in Gloucestershire’s beautiful countryside. We provided them with outings, stimulating activities and delicious meals, making it a special experience for all.
